Richard Upshall

Biography

I was born in 1970 in Basingstoke to John and Frances Upshall, my father was a Chartered Accountant and company Director who rose to become the Company Secretary for the Pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly before retiring in 2001.

Always having the entrepreneurial spirit, my first enterprise was a gardening business established in 1983, and by 1986, aged 16, it had 4 fellow students working on a part time basis. This business model was to be the one carried forward to other businesses in the future it seemed. I also dabbled with nightclub promotion and even managed a school production which actually made a profit for pretty much the first time whilst attending Yateley school. Having achieved 8 O levels and 3 A levels at that school it is somewhat ironic that my favourite subject, Geology, was to play such a large part in my future success.

Living in both the North and South of England as a child, I was set up for moving vertically up and down the UK even today. The UK offices for OES, Askaris, RU Hungry, RU Consulting and RU Training are all located in the North East, an area I pull inspiration from even today, well, when it is sunny anyway.

My connections to the military are through my Grandfather, Eric Randall Cooper, a mentor in my early years whose sudden death in 1986 during O level exams shook me.

He was an officer in the Royal Marines who went on to become a Prison Governor and has very much played a part in the man I have grown to be. Having served his country in so many ways, his focus was largely vocational in later years working with the under privileged, he was a true pillar of society and I feel a responsibility to play my part, whilst claiming commercial success along the way. My paternal Grandfather Reginald Upshall also served in The 10th Royal Hussars during the second world war and was decorated.

University was not really for me, and I left after two terms to start work and spent some time at a Financial Services Consultancy, then Harrods at Heathrow airport before upping sticks and heading out to find my fortune in Dubai, UAE.”

“I believe a team is only as good as the people in it, from those in the front line to those in the back office. With that in mind I will always strive to provide the best work place, best conditions and the utmost respect for all, at all times, without exception.”
